Who would i make a video for?

If i was to creat a music video , i would prefer to create it for two artists LMFAO and TREY SONGZ.

LMFAO-
I would like to create and produce a music video for 'Lmfao', they are a dance/ techno orientated genre. this means i would have to add alot of partying, bright and extrravegent props and costumes with a variety of colours.this is becuase their songs are normally about partying and having a good time.they concentrate highly on their costume to make sure they keep their unique style. they do this by using bright colours and diamond covered clothes.i would definently have to use a distinctive choreographed dance sequence as they are well known for their funky and popular dance moves. as they like to call it ''shuffling''.

Trey Songz  - Trey Songz is unlike Lmfao but still i would like to create a video for Songz them , Trey Songz is known for having very beautiful women in his videos masquerading him , and he is always dominant and frolicking with them. Trey Songz tends to flaunt the fact that he has alot of money so i would shoot a video which has expensive cars and expensive places like a emperor suite in Caesars palace in las vegas .Trey Songz lyrics denote a lot of passion, pleasure and pain in his life so this must be represented in the music videos.

Andrew goodwin theory

  1. - There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
    - There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
    - He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist.
    - Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require.
    - Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
    - Intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.
  2. Notions of looking
    • Most of the time we see the artist looking directly in the camera, there eyes focused on us. Its like there are talking directly to use, audience having a personal connection with the audience.
  3. Visual and Lyrics
    - How a word or scene links
Here the artist sings “ if you like it you should have put a ring on it” which links to the movement shown, pointing to her hand.
As the artist sings the words appear on screen, emphasizing what he says.
  4. Characteristics
    - Always has female dancers in her video, this is a common feature though out her videos. The location for this genre is typical, normally it would be shot with loads of people and more objects.

Planning

Concept Layout

Having listened to the song several times, we have decided that the video needs to be thick in symbolism. The story needs to be realistic, with dialogue at the beginning to set the tone of the video. We will carry this on by setting it mostly at night and in the solitary environment of a midnight road trip.

We also want lots of shots of the wheel turning in slow motion as well as a picture frame of the couple breaking in slow motion until it reaches a fully broken state at which point it'll be played in reverse slow motion to show the couple getting back together.

The video will start with a breakup between a couple and the male storms out of the house to his car. As he slams the car door shut, the music will kick in and carry on throughout. We will see his journey through the night to the coast which will be interlaced with shots of the band playing. He reaches the coast as the sun rises over the sea and realises he has to return to his love. Throughout the journey, we will also see the aforementioned picture frame shattering in slow motion at some parts. That effect will stop completely as he looks at the sunrise, and on his trip back we will see the frame coming back together also in slow motion.

We hope that the mix of strong narrative, band shots, and multiple layers of semiotics will create a video that is both pleasing for the audience to watch but also does the song justice.

Prop List
The props listed below are items that were featured in the filming process of our music video for 'Wheels'.
1 x Photo Frame - This item was used to symbolise the love of the main protagonists, when broken it symbolises that their love is gone and when the reverese editing comes into affect it shows that their love has been re-kindled.
2 x Picture of couple - This item was symbolic of the couple and their happiness
1 x Car Keys - We filmed a ignition shot of the car that we used in the music video, the car keys are seen as a prop because they effect the narrative.
Equipment List
We used a varierty of different types of equipment, e.g experimenting with different lenses on the DSLR, so that we were able to study and get a good idea into how to produce a authentic rock music video.
1 x Drum Set - An instrument used in the performance/band shots
1 x Drum sticks - Used both as a prop and equipment because it helped provide the drum kit sound
2 x Guitar Plectrums -  Same as the drum sticks
2 x Electric Guitars - An instrument used in the performance/band shots
1 x Bass Guitar - An instrument used in the performance/band shots
1 x Microphone - For the use of the singer
1 x Microphone Stand - For the use of the singer
2 x Spotlight Lamps - These lamps gave a fantastic lighting effect on the performance shots, gave the camera angles a more powerful connotation
1 x Guitar Amplifier - We featured a series of shots as the guitar amp as the subject, we featured this because our group felt like it suited the genre
1 x MacBook - The MacBook serves us so that we can edit our work.
1 x iPhone - Rob Dan's iPhone films in 720p resolution, which is practically a camera, we decided to use Rob Dan's iPhone for the filming and the behind the scenes footage.
1 x Sony HD Camera - Being a part of group i will be able to produce us with a Sony HD Camera.
1 x Canon HD DSLR - We aquired this camera from an external source, this camera allowed to get the 'fish eye' effect which is a common convention in rock music videos.
3 x Input Wires - This was mainly a piece of mise en scene for the perfomance shots, the input wires give the guitar asthestic a more believeable denotation.
1 x Monopod - This allowed one of our cameramen to get a higher filming perspective which is commonly featured in performance shots of rock music videos.
Lighting Design
During the filming of the performance band shots we as a group decided it would be a good idea to follow not only the usual conventions of rock music videos e.g. close ups on instruments but also the conventions and traits of producing one. We started to explore into what common pieces of cinematography keep reoccuring behind the scenes. The lighting formation when shooting the performance shots was something that we decided to incoroporate into 'Wheels'. Using the schools resources we were able to obtain two spotlight lamps, these lamps in a dark enviroment create a powerful effect which we thought could help the portrayal of the ideology of symbolism we were aiming for.
Previous to the day to our first filming of the performance shots Tom and the director Rob Dan sat down and discussed the formation of the lights, which way we should face the lights on the band, should they move with the camera or be stationary? All these questions we took inconsideration and thought about how the lights could play a part with our storyboard, that it gave us new ideas into what shots to use, we thought it would be a good idea after we've filmed the majority of the band members all playing together that we would film shots of the band members individually, that way the powerful lighting effect gives the instrument player a more epic and strong presence over the audience.

Location Details
Performance Shots Location - Drama Room, Post 16 Sixth Form Centre, UB10 0EX
[Insert Picture here]
We decided to shoot here, because we had previously used it for a premlinary task and were aware of its capabilities as a setting for a rock music video, we used the black curtains avaliable to our advantage to black out the surrounding decor, which gave all of the instruments, band members and the contrasting light a more powerful effect.
Interior/Exterior Shots and Iconography Shots - Rover 25, M25 and M23 motorways as well as Brighton Pier
[Insert Picture here]
Brighton was an ideal place to film part of music because we really wanted the use of the contrasting Brighton Pier lights in the darkness of the night, plus the semotic of the beach being peaceful helped the ideology of symbolism, the sunrise was an important part as well because it symbolises the couples love being reborn.

Storyline-
First scene shows a long-shot of a man waking up in an alleyway. As the camera zooms into him he is immediately confronted by a woman standing in front of him dressed in white with black hair and dark make up. The sight of her startles him and he quickly jumps to his feet and runs away. He runs through the town and the audience is unaware of why he is so scared of her until we see him look in the reflection of a shop window and behind him we see large spiders legs and cobwebs. The woman symbolises his fear. As he runs through town and comes across more people, some of them too begin to see their fears once approached by the woman and also run away. From seeing the activities of the people who are running away from the woman, it soon becomes apparent to the audience that they are being punished. People like drug dealers, muggers and serial killers, like the main character at the beginning, are being punished for their crimes by being confronted by their fears. Throughout this, flashes of the night before in a club are being shown, where the audience is shown that this is where the man at the beginning first met the woman.

Justifying ideas-
The woman is wearing a white dress as the connotations of white are purity and innocence. To contrast this, the black hair and dark make up represent death and fear. The white conveys the fact that the woman is actually innocent in all of this and has no control over what the people are seeing, while the black contradicts this idea, further portraying the fear that is being shown.

Conventions-
A lot of quick cuts will be used as a convention of Drum and Bass. Along with this, flashes of a club scene will be shown throughout the video as another convention of this music genre.

The Notion of Looking-
Women in the club will be dressed in revealing outfits while dancing provocatively. Extreme close-ups of peoples' eyes when they become faced with their fears will also be shown in order for the audience to see their reactions and emotions.

Intertextual References-
The idea of people seeing their fears when confronted by this woman draws inspiration from the film, Batman Begins. In this film, once people have been intoxicated by a gas, they then see their deepest fears. This is similar to the main idea of our music video in which the woman has the same effect as the gas.

Music Video Meeting W/ Group 3 15/9/11

Agenda

What ideas for music video i.e. conventions to incorporate into our own music video using the our primary research?
Creating the storyboard for our music video, possible iconography ideas?
Putting together the primary research onto our blogs, editng the focus group footage.

  • Ideas for our music video using the knowledge and conventions we have researched - love narrative between a hetrosexual couple, during this a break up forms, so the male protagonist leaves their apartment and drives away, during this the male realises how much he loves his girlfriend and goes back to her.
  • Possible iconography shots: Brighton Pier Night shots, Alloy Wheel exterior shots, Rear View Mirror, Sunset/Sunrise shots, Siloutte shots and Cracked Photofram containng a picture of the couple - Broken at first but then the frame is repaired in colleration with lyrics through the use of reversed slow motion shot/editing.
Assignments for the Group

Tom and Rob are going to edit the focus group for the next meeting.

Aran is going to use the iconography shots described above, print the lyrics and annotate them into a storyboard.

I'm going to begin writing the primary research purposal.

Music Video Meeting W/ Group 2 7/9/11
Having transferred from one class to the other, this was my first lesson intergrated into my new group which consists of Tom, Daminder and Aran. They have already looked into conventions of genres in music videos so it is encouraging to know we're all at the same level.

Agenda

What song has been chosen?
What conventions are there in rock music videos?
Who is the demographic?

  • The song chosen by Tom and approved by the rest of us was 'Wheels' by the Foo Fighters because of its connotations and lyrics can be depicted and represented through the use of good iconography and cinematography.
  • The common conventions for rock videos is a love narrative - so we are going to start building up a storyline based upon this. Aran also found out that the majority of rock videos often have a 'band shot', this is where the band are seen playing their instruments.
  • The main demographic for the Foo Fighters are males aged between 12-17. http://lexicalist.com/search.cgi?s=foo%20fighters&d=ag
Assignments for the Group

Tom and Rob going to begin writing and constructing the questionnaire for our primary research.

I'm is going to get the equipment for our focus group.

Aran is going to find participants/surveors for our focus group.
