Semiotics- We live in a world of signs and communicate through them. We learn to decode visual images by becoming familiar with the rules that govern how component parts work together. The study of signs and their meanings is called semiotics.
According to Roland Barthes, 'An image is denoted. It has connotations; these may differ according to culture.'

After taking this into consideration, we watched four very different music videos all by different artists taking note of the denoted images and the connotations being represented.
- - There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

- He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist.
- Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require.
- Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
- Intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans. - Notions of looking
- Most of the time we see the artist looking directly in the camera, there eyes focused on us. Its like there are talking directly to use, audience having a personal connection with the audience.

- Always has female dancers in her video, this is a common feature though out her videos. The location for this genre is typical, normally it would be shot with loads of people and more objects.
music video analysis - 4 videos
we were asked to produce a cd cover for a specific artist and single, first we had to depict and analyse 4 very different videos from 4 different artists and genres.
Video 1 - Artist - Fabolous - Body ya
- genre - hip hop
the main symbolism of this video is of fabolous showing off his money , we know this because he is wearing some sort of expensive jewellery or ''bling'' , also hes got luxurious expensive cars with half naked attractive women surrounding him .
in this video we see how arrogant fabolous is and that he thinks he is better than his competetion and shows this in his lyrics and video, he shows this by when anyone on the streets come into to contact with him they instantly collapse to the ground, this backs up his point and lyric , which says '' R.I.P to the competetion . in which he is saying his competitors cant come close to his status.
Video 2 - Dancehall Crasher - ENOUGH
- genre - ROCK/POP/PUNK
- in this video there are alot of bright colours like yellow and red this represents alot of happiness and enjoyment but also chaos which could how they are describing this particular genre of music and the audience they are tring to reach.
- also the camera is constantly moving this also gives a feel of chaos alot of madness and fun , exciting and fast paced action .
video 3 - Dixie Chicks - Not ready to make nice

- the main them of this video is black and white colours , this shows that this is a simple video and the storyline behind it is straight forward. in the vdeo we see flashbacks of what looks like a young girl behing held down . this is the past of the main dixi chick childhood.in which she looks to be being punished , being strapped down to a doctors bed with adults consulting over her.
in terms of camera movement and shots , alot of close ups are used to the girls face . this allows the audience to see her emotion which is anger .
Video 4 - Josh wink - Higher State of consciousness
genre - electro/dance
this video is full of fast paced cuts in editing of all different colours , shapes and actions. this is becuase they are trying to get the audience involved and are trying to make them feel in a surreal place.
it is filmed in a music festival where everyone seems to be high or intoxicated.
After watchin all four videos, me and my group decided to choose the josh wink higher state of consciousness.and below is our cd cover that we felt best represented this video and artist.

thursday was one of my close friends birthdays so me and a few friends went down to a bar/club where we had a few drinks and enjoyed our night out celebrating his birthday.

i chose two songs for friday because this is where i was going out for my cousins engagement , this meant putting on a nice new suit and lookin'fly' , also when i go out with my cousins i know that it will definently be a night to remember as we know how to go out in style.
