Initial ideas

Having listened to the song several times, we have decided that the video needs to be thick in symbolism. The story needs to be realistic, with dialogue at the beginning to set the tone of the video. We will carry this on by setting it mostly at night and in the solitary environment of a midnight road trip.

We also want lots of shots of the wheel turning in slow motion as well as a picture frame of the couple breaking in slow motion until it reaches a fully broken state at which point it'll be played in reverse slow motion to show the couple getting back together.

The video will start with a breakup between a couple and the male storms out of the house to his car. As he slams the car door shut, the music will kick in and carry on throughout. We will see his journey through the night to the coast which will be interlaced with shots of the band playing. He reaches the coast as the sun rises over the sea and realises he has to return to his love. Throughout the journey, we will also see the aforementioned picture frame shattering in slow motion at some parts. That effect will stop completely as he looks at the sunrise, and on his trip back we will see the frame coming back together also in slow motion.

We hope that the mix of strong narrative, band shots, and multiple layers of semiotics will create a video that is both pleasing for the audience to watch but also does the song justice.

Music Video Meeting W/ Group 3 15/9/11

Agenda

What ideas for music video i.e. conventions to incorporate into our own music video using the our primary research?
Creating the storyboard for our music video, possible iconography ideas?
Putting together the primary research onto our blogs, editng the focus group footage.

  • Ideas for our music video using the knowledge and conventions we have researched - love narrative between a hetrosexual couple, during this a break up forms, so the male protagonist leaves their apartment and drives away, during this the male realises how much he loves his girlfriend and goes back to her.
  • Possible iconography shots: Brighton Pier Night shots, Alloy Wheel exterior shots, Rear View Mirror, Sunset/Sunrise shots, Siloutte shots and Cracked Photofram containng a picture of the couple - Broken at first but then the frame is repaired in colleration with lyrics through the use of reversed slow motion shot/editing.
Assignments for the Group

Tom and Rob are going to edit the focus group for the next meeting.

Aran is going to use the iconography shots described above, print the lyrics and annotate them into a storyboard.

I'm going to begin writing the primary research purposal.

Music Video Meeting W/ Group 2 7/9/11
Having transferred from one class to the other, this was my first lesson intergrated into my new group which consists of Tom, Daminder and Aran. They have already looked into conventions of genres in music videos so it is encouraging to know we're all at the same level.

Agenda

What song has been chosen?
What conventions are there in rock music videos?
Who is the demographic?

  • The song chosen by Tom and approved by the rest of us was 'Wheels' by the Foo Fighters because of its connotations and lyrics can be depicted and represented through the use of good iconography and cinematography.
  • The common conventions for rock videos is a love narrative - so we are going to start building up a storyline based upon this. Aran also found out that the majority of rock videos often have a 'band shot', this is where the band are seen playing their instruments.
  • The main demographic for the Foo Fighters are males aged between 12-17. http://lexicalist.com/search.cgi?s=foo%20fighters&d=ag
Assignments for the Group

Tom and Rob going to begin writing and constructing the questionnaire for our primary research.

I'm is going to get the equipment for our focus group.

Aran is going to find participants/surveors for our focus group.

Questionnaire results

After collecting our questionnaire results , we then put the results into pie charts so we could clearly visualise the results of what our target audience want from a music video.

From our results we could concur that our audience will mainly be teenagers between 16-19 and are of a white ethnicity , we found that our audience will be both male and female , as it was even. in terms of music preference , they like a video that is set in a intimate venue like a bar or club, where there is a romance that happens, and in which there is some sort of narrative build up . we will also make sure that we can soomehow relate to our audiene in which the lyrics are symbolised within the video.

Questionnaire

my group decided to use the aid of a questionnaire to reach our target audience, as we felt it would be a quick , effective method of gaining vital information we need to understand what our demographic would want from a music video. Questionnaires are also easy to analyse and evaluate.

Primary Research Proposal

For our primary research, we are aware that both qualitative and quantitative data must be collected and studied in order to fully understand the wants, needs, and background of our target demographic. Quantitative data would be suitable in finding patterns and trends whilst qualitative data would let us get more in touch with our audience on a personal level. Thus, we selected questionnaires as our quantitative method and a focus group as our qualitative method.

Questionnaires have many advantages. They can get as specific with closed questions as is necessary, and this can prove crucial to getting a thorough understanding of what it is the audience want. We can also identify patterns and trends in the data, with software such as Excel offering us easy-to-use methods of constructing pie charts and other graphs with which to compare majorities and minorities in answer selection. Distribution of questionnaires is also relatively simple as they can be printed off en masse in one go and handed out by us. The main disadvantage with questionnaires is the fact that each question must be carefully worded so as to avoid biasing the respondant's answers or even confusing them. Also, the process of getting the questionnaires back and analysing the data may be slightly tedious which could lead to errors made by the person handling the data.

A focus group is a perfect method of gaining qualitative data as it gives the participants a chance to really open up on each question and give us an in-depth view on what the audience looks for in a relaxed, informal way. Furthermore, focus groups allow participants to interact with each other and bounce off each other's answers. Whilst this may lead to interesting answers that a questionnaire wouldn't leave space for, it also increases the risk of the participants getting off topic and wasting time. However, when it comes to understanding who the target audience are and what they want then we believe there really is no other qualitative data collection method superior to the focus group,
